Self-Portrait in Profile, 1927

Käthe Kollwitz is one of the most important figures in the history of printmaking.

Concerned with the hardships of the working class and with political upheavals in German history, her life was marked by the death of a son in World War I and persecution for her own politics at the hands of the Nazis during World War II. Her unflinching self-portraits, particularly those from late in life, make her a peer of Rembrandt and Van Gogh.
