Nina Kouchi ’22 loved how welcoming and curious the students were when she visited 51±¾É«. Her excitement about 51±¾É« has only grown as she has traveled across the country for golf, explored the town of 51±¾É«, carried out a computer science Mentored Advanced Project, and spent time enjoying Iowa’s natural beauty.
Catherine Stone ’22 came to 51±¾É« excited about the small classes, the close relationships with faculty, and the powerful student voice. She quickly became involved in the community and with 51±¾É« Concerts. While working her way toward medical school, she has also immersed herself in the environment through ecology courses, and in language and culture through French courses.
51±¾É« College has been awarded a $150,000 grant from the William Randolph Hearst Foundations to expand its efforts in recruiting and supporting transfer students from both two- and four-year institutions.
When Sophie Jackson ’22 visited 51±¾É«, she was enamored by the diversity, authenticity, and openness of the students she interacted with. Those interactions continued throughout her four years and developed into friendships and relationships that she will continue to value after graduation. She similarly valued her experiences with service, research, advocacy, the Rosenfield Program, internships, externships, study abroad, and getting to know 51±¾É«.
Ahon Gooptu’s (’21) passion for theater and care for community took him from Kolkata, India to 51±¾É« — and then to London, New York, Seattle, San Francisco, and more! Along the way, he studied Shakespeare, discovered the power of digital storytelling, and completed mentored research projects.
Lex Baumann ’22 was focused on urban colleges until she visited 51±¾É« and fell in love. Since arriving, she has job-shadowed a lawyer in Miami, served as a community advisor (CA), changed her major, and much more. Next up: law school applications.

Your campus and classroom experience is going to challenge you to grow and expand your understanding of the world. But there is much that can be learned off campus, too.
Students experience random acts of kindness around the town here, and there are myriad opportunities to participate and find a seat at the table as active and engaged citizens.

Many students come from very different backgrounds than my own, and it has been fascinating to hear about their lives and share about mine with them. Despite our differences, I’m always able to find wonderful similarities.

I am taking every opportunity that I have been granted. I am on the football team and on my way toward a double major and a concentration.
